SUSTAINABLE EATING

It is estimated that food production will have to increase by 50% to meet the needs of a projected population of 10 Billion by 2050!

Fact:

Sourcing fresh food from local farms:

  • Helps boost local economy.
  • Reduces the need for shipping and thus lowers the carbon footprint.
  • Encourages innovative sustainable farming techniques.
  • Provides fresh and delicious tasting food.

Action:

Go to a restaurant that locally sources most of their ingredients. Restaurants that do this typically highlight that on their websites or on their menus.

Fact:

The footprint of one hamburger is approximately 650 gallons of water. Compare that to the footprint of one bowl of lentils at 57 gallons of water or one bowl of salad at about 21 gallons of water.

Action:

Eat at least three vegan meals per week to help reduce your water footprint.

Fact:

Three billion metric tons of CO2-equivalent chemicals were produced by transporting food for human consumption each year.

Action:

Plant a vegetable or herb garden in your backyard, consider purchasing a small portable hydroponic device to grow salad vegetables and herbs inside your house, or buy in-season, locally grown vegetables. By minimizing the food supply chain, you reduce the carbon footprint of bringing food to your kitchen.
