A small home structure made up of green leaves

Sustainable Home

Our homes are our place of comfort.  Let's do what we can to make sustainable choices in one of the core areas of our lives.

Fact:

The US produces nearly 117 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually from air conditioning. This is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of 24.5 million passenger vehicles.

Action:

Use natural methods of temperature control when possible. For example, use fans and sweaters instead of turning up air conditioners or heaters.

Fact:

Composting has significant benefits for our world:

  • Significantly cutting down on the amount of trash in a landfill.
  • Enriching the soil with nutrients.
  • Increasing the soil’s ability to retain moisture.
  • Sequestering carbon which helps to remove it from the atmosphere.

Action:

Consider how much you can compost in your home and research local composting options.

Fact:

If all computers in the US were Energy Star compliant, approximately $1.8 billion dollars in energy costs could be saved each year. This would in return lead to a decrease in greenhouse gas emission equivalent to that of two million cars.

Action:

When purchasing your next computer, learn more about Energy Star compliant computer options. Start by checking out www.EnergyStar.gov. You may even find energy rebates that will save you even more money!
